IN LIEU OF GIFTS

Forgoing the usual bar and  bat mitzvah  gift table, some teens are asking guests to contribute to  charity instead . When Leor started preparing for his bar mitzvah, he had a clear vision in mind of how he would celebrate his coming of age ceremony by helping other animals like his beloved Kylo (Wonder Paws Rescue Class of 2020) find a forever home. Growing up, it was a family tradition for him and his siblings to ask guests not to bring presents to their birthday parties. In lieu of gifts, each of the children were invited to pick a charity of choice to receive donations from their friends and family. So, it was only natural that Leor’s bar mitzvah would uphold this time-honored tradition. Leor chose Wonder Paws Rescue as his bar mitzvah  charity because he couldn’t imagine life without his four-legged, best friend Kylo. He created a donation page online and erected table tents at his party with a QR code to capture additional dollars onsite. Leor is excited to share that he raised over $6,200 for Wonder Paws Rescue which will go to help fund veterinary bills, subsidize rescue missions and buy food, medicine and beds.

The  Kittens  Are Coming…

What is kitten season you ask? Most cats have kittens in the warmer months (spring through summer) so this time of year is known as 'kitten season' by shelters, vets, and pet owners. It’s also known as the overflow and overwhelm season as animal control agencies, shelters and rescue organizations feel the squeeze associated with the sprouting and spreading of newborn kittens. While adorably cute, the influx of felines are extremely vulnerable and require around the clock care including frequent bottle-feeding. The cat overpopulation crisis is real so remember to get your pet spayed or neutered. You can also help the cause by fostering, adopting or donating funds or supplies to Wonder Paws Rescue during this critical time of kitten season. It only takes a “Meowment” to save a life.

Delightful and Funny Lola

Meet Lola! This vibrant, social 1 yr old girl is like having a puppy stuck inside of a cat’s body. She is always running right behind you and has to be a part of everything you’re doing! She will zoom across the room after any toy you throw and come back with it in her mouth. Lola is a petite girl, weighing in at only 7 lbs but her huge personality definitely makes up for her little size. When she’s in the mood for snuggles, she will come up to you and put her paws up to your face and ask for love. She will make the most incredible companion. Dog Days of Summer!

Summer is upon us. As the temperatures rise, keep your beloved canine cool with these seasonal safety tips:

• Heat stress can lead to heat stroke. Early warning signs of heat exhaustion include restlessness, heavy panting, vomiting, diarrhea, increased respiration, heart rate and salivation. 

• Take your pet out to play early in the morning or before bed and dinner.

• Avoid the sun during peak times. Keep your pet inside or in the shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun's rays are the strongest.

• Walk your pet in the grass. If you must walk on long stretches of asphalt or brick, consider using mesh booties or paw wax to help protect your dog’s pads. Do not use unventilated booties since the paw pads are essential for temperature regulation.

Remember, if it's too hot for YOUR bare feet,

then it's too hot for THEIR paws.

• Ensure your dog stays hydrated. Play in the garden sprinklers or make pet ice lollies.

• Consider buying UV protective clothing for your pet.

• Apply dog-specific sun cream to the sensitive areas of your dog (nose, lips, tips of the ears and belly). 

• It should go without saying, but never, ever leave your dog unattended in a car or RV.
